Frustration and Conflict

Excerpt

The idea of writing this book arose out of a number of seminars held in 1957-8 at the University of New England in Australia. It seemed to the writer that a systematic examination of the accumulated knowledge in the areas of frustration and conflict might facilitate the development of theories which would assist in overcoming some of the confusions which presently exist concerning the relationship of frustration and conflict. The book does not, however, constitute an original contribution with respect to theory. It is hoped that it will prove useful to advanced students who have a particular interest in frustration and conflict or who are doing research in these areas.

A special debt of gratitude is extended to Professor Duncan Howie, of the University of New England, where most of this book was written. His constant encouragement and stimulating critical comments were of the greatest value. In a more indirect way, the author is also indebted to his former teachers, Professor L. S. Hearnshaw of the University of Liverpool; and Professor H. J. Eysenck, of the Institute of Psychiatry. The final chapter of the book was written at the University of Western Australia.
