Numerous histories of labor unions have been written in recent years. Some of these histories have been apologies for union leaders or for the specific unions. Others, however, have been factual studies of the growth and development of unions. As a result of these histories, whether apology or factual study, we now have a better understanding of the development of the labor movement. Relatively few studies, however, have made any attempt to analyze the structure and government of national unions.

This study of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners is one in a series of studies of the structure and government of unions. It is not a history of the Carpenters' Union. It attempts to describe and analyze the formal and informal structure of the governing institutions of the union at the national level. Historical events are brought into the picture only when they aid in the understanding of the current situation.
