Excerpt

This collection of essays touches, as the title indicates, upon the most outstanding points of Italian literature. Its component parts are chronologically arranged, and they span the whole development of the literature of Italy, from Dante to Benedetto Croce and Luigi Pirandello.

All of the essays have been previously published in periodicals primarily meant for scholars. We have translated those originally written in Italian and added to them those already written in English in the belief that the general public will find interest in them. We hope that, in the present upsurge of culture in the United States, this book will find its place on the desks of cultured persons.

We are very grateful to each of the following journals for allowing us to reprint these articles: Italica, the outstanding periodical in the Italian language, for Dante's Contribution to Aesthetics, Dante and Courtly Language, The Court of Heaven, Realistic Elements in Tasso's Aminta, The Realistic Approach in the Evaluation of Romanticism, Realism During the Romantic Age, Alessandro Manzoni and the Realistic Novel, Italian Verismo, The Novecento, Grazia Deledda and Her Early Literary Contacts, Benedetto Croce and Criticism; The Romanic Review for Francesca da Rimini and Giacomo Leopardi's L'Infinito, published at a time when there was much controversy over the interpretation of both of these topics; Publications of the Modern Language Association of America for Luonardo Bruni Aretino and Humanism; Symposium for Luigi Pirandello as I Saw Him and The Historical Reality of the Dolce Stil Nuovo [Sweet New Style] as well as Dante's Love Concept; Letterature Moderne for Lights and Shadows in the Vita Nuova and Benedetto Croce and Luigi Pirandello; Mod ern Language Quarterly . . .
