THE original intention of this book was to examine the claims for the sources of Spanish architecture in the Gothic and Romanesque period. They are various. Was everything invented in Persia? Or in Syria, or Asia Minor, or Mesopotamia? Was everything borrowed from France? Was nothing learned from outside the Peninsula?

M. Dieulafoy will have it that all the structural forms of Romanesque came from Persia to Spain, passed thence into France, and came back to Spain after the Reconquest. On consideration it appears, in the first place, that this contention will be affected, in a way, by the larger question . . .
