Excerpt

This study is the result of investigations carried on by the author while a member of the Economic Seminary of the Johns Hopkins University. The collection of trade union publications in the library of the Johns Hopkins University was the chief source of information, and considerable use was made of legal reports and publications as well. The material obtained from these sources was supplemented by personal interviews with trade union officials, and by field investigations in the West Virginia mining area and the Philadelphia hosiery district.

The author wishes to express his appreciation to Professor J. H. Hollander, Professor G. E. Barnett, and Associate Professor W. O. Weyforth for assistance received at every stage of the inquiry. He wishes also to thank the editors of the Quarterly Journal of Economics for permission to republish material that first appeared in the columns of that magazine. The field investigations undertaken were made possible by a grant from the Lessing Rosenthal Fund for Economic Research.
