Excerpt

We have to thank the Oxford University Press for permission to use a number of ProfessorSkeat notes to Richard the Redeles (nos. II 113, 111 118, 140, 186, 249) which were not incorporated in the Early English Text Society's edition of that poem. The late Sir George Warner gave permission to use his text of Mandeville, Dr. J. P. Oakden allowed us to quote his analysis of the metre of R in his Alliterative Poetry in Middle English, Dr.George H. Fowler 'Rolls from the Office of the Sheriff of Beds and Bucks 1332-84' threw much light on the legal questions involved, and Mr. W. Hancock's note on the keeping of bees supplied a corrective to the fancy of our poet. We feel under great obligations to each and all of them.
