Excerpt

The following pages are intended to portray the life history of Television Station W9XK at the State University of Iowa, from its inception in 1931 to its shutdown in 1939. It will be presented by such documents, papers, journal articles, lectures, records, etc., as were prepared and written during the life of the station.

To present anything other than a documentary account now would subject it to distortion and coloring, caused by a knowledge of the tremendous development that television broadcasting has undergone since those years. At that time the future of television was unknown, and only imaginative persons foresaw the large place it would eventually occupy in the life and times of the people of today. However, through the documentary record of this early exploit or venture into the field of educational television, the thinking of the time will be correctly portrayed. Only brief explanatory paragraphs have been inserted to give continuity to the treatment.
