The History and Development of the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution

Excerpt

The writer has attempted in the succeeding pages to present the constitutional history and law of the Fourth Amendment, a safeguard to the liberty of the individual which has come into especial prominence within the last several decades. It has been his endeavor to examine carefully the history of the Amendment and to survey analytically the cases decided by the final authority on the interpretation of the guaranty, the Supreme Court of the United States.

The writer wishes to acknowledge his grateful indebtedness to Professors W. W. Willoughby and James Hart, under whom he worked at The Johns Hopkins University, for their interested and kindly assistance in the preparation of this study. He is also indebted to Dr. Johannes Mattern and Dr. Richard M. Haywood, of the same university, for their help on part of the first chapter.
