My sole intention, when I embarked upon the task of writing this book twelve years ago, was to present to English readers, in as concise a form as possible, a story which was then all too little known to most of them. The pressing need for a "Short History of Italy" in the English tongue was borne in upon me as early as the year 1902, when I endeavoured to give a series of lantern lectures on Italian history to London school children at the Passmore Edwards Settlement. Since then the need has been in great part met by the appearance of the slender volume entitled Italy, Mediæval and Modern, written by Miss Ady in collaboration with three other Oxford lecturers; but although this summary presents the case with admirable clearness, it still perhaps leaves room for another interpretation, based on the long-continued ruminations of a single mind. The shortcomings of the following attempt will be obvious to every reader, but at least it is the result of a deep and growing love for the subject, of many wanderings in the by-paths of Italy, and of an inherited affection for her present population. For a summary of this nature, which is admittedly only an introduction to the subject, I have not thought it necessary to attempt any original research; I have not studied in the archives of Italian towns; I do not claim to have made new discoveries.
