Truth is stranger than fiction. This book is strange in the way that truth is when it is complicated and delicately told. It is an account of one woman's psychoanalysis as reported by her. She is one of the greatest living poets. She was 47 years old when she began her analysis with Freud. He was 77. The physical scene is shifted from Vienna to London when Freud goes there, but the fantasy ranges from ancient Egypt to eternity. The two main characters are Freud himself, and H. D., the poet and dreamer, supported by a large and various cast who enter and leave the scene by the richest of associational doors.

It is at once more and less than an account of a psychoanalysis. It does not aim at conscientious historical coverage of the material revealed but rather it is a poetic document in its own right.
