Excerpt

When this series of books was first planned it was intended that each volume should describe an ancient people or a place where peoples lived in antiquity. As the series has developed it has been decided to modify this initial purpose: we published in 1960 Bosi book on The Lapps which dealt with a living people, but people who preserved to the present day an ancient way of life; and now we publish a book dealing with neither an ancient people nor place, but a subject -- a subject common to many ancient peoples, namely the communication of thought through distance and time by writing. Its author is Dr David Diringer, Lecturer in Semitic Epigraphy in the University of Cambridge, and Professor in the University of Florence, and founder of the Alphabet Museum, Cambridge. It is a pleasure to welcome this book for itself, and also as the first in the Ancient Peoples and Places series dealing with a specific aspect of antiquity.
