Here is an extract from a letter I received last year:

New York City, N.Y. 18 June 1948.

My dear Ernest,

. . . Yesterday, I had a very vivid reminder of the day I last saw you, in that shabby old house just off Grosvenor Square. An aircraft cut off its engine just as it came over our house and I sprang to the window, as I did then, more than half expecting to see another buzz bomb in the sky, and as I did so I suddenly remembered your voice saying, "I still like to keep away from windows that have their glass left in them." That was June 1944 and this is October 1950. I guess there's some difference--. But how much?

Maybe in June 1948 one can't help thinking of wars but, aside from that, that reminder set me thinking pretty hard again--my excuse for dawdling in the morning--and at the end of it all I found myself asking how far have we come since VE day--and by "we" I mean your side of it. Here at home I can keep abreast of things, but what has been happening in Britain? I know I've had occasional letters from you, there's the radio and the news commentaries and God knows how many million words have been written about it all. But the focus is too close. It's all yesterday and tomorrow stuff. It doesn't give me the chance to stand back and see it whole. And I guess there are plenty like me.

Has it been all one long crisis or not? What is this "socialism" that you English seem to like and we don't? Why did no owner of a gas works barricade himself in and go down with his guns firing? Are candies still rationed--its just plain incredible to us that they should be? Why don't your trade unions like high wages and high . . .
