The preparation of this volume was undertaken in the summer of 1938, at the request of friends in Prague. It was to have appeared in Czech only, in the idea that anything relating to the great President's career would be of interest to his compatriots, and that many details of his two years' activity in England still remained unknown: an American edition was also planned. The downfall of Czechoslovak independence, following upon the shameful Pact of Munich, rendered publication impossible. But to-day the situation has changed beyond recognition. A Czechoslovak Government, under President Beneš himself, has been set up in England and officially recognised as the ally of the British Government, the remnants of their army are training in our midst, and Czech airmen are adding their quota to the splendid achievements of the R.A.F. The Czechs are no longer 'a people of whom we know nothing', and in many quarters there is the keenest sympathy and interest in their cause. Hence it is but fitting that attention should be drawn to the intimate connection of Masaryk, the founder of their modern liberties, with our own country at the height of the Great War--a connection prepared by long study and natural affinities no less than by the political exigencies of the moment.

Though I shall always regard it as one of the great privileges of my life to have enjoyed the friendship of two such men as Thomas Masaryk and Edward Beneš, I should have preferred to keep my own name out of the narrative, as not in any way relevant. But I soon found that this was not possible, that my correspondence with Masaryk, and the Memoranda which I Englished and distributed for him, contain certain essential clues to his work in England in those decisive years, and deserve to be placed on record once for all.
