In the spring of 1943 I had an idea for a motion picture. At that time I was employed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and had just resigned my post as executive head of their low budget film department to concentrate on writing and producing pictures that would be my personal productions.

On June 14th of that year I sent Mr. Floyd Hendrickson, the head of M-G-M's legal department, the following enigmatic memo:

Dear Floyd:

I am sending to you a sealed envelope with
an original idea enclosed. This is an idea for
a motion picture which I have discussed with . . .
