Excerpt

In the spring of 1975, Radio Telefis Eireann marked the bicentenary of the birth of Daniel O'Connell by broadcasting a series of Thomas Davis Lectures his historical significance. These lectures, in a revised form, are published in this present volume.

We are indebted to Mr Michael Littleton, the general editor of the Thomas Davis Lectures advice and co-operation. We would like to record our appreciation of the generosity of Allied Irish Banks Limited for a subvention in aid of publication and we wish to express our gratitude to the late Declan Dwyer, of Cork, for taking a practical interest in securing the publication of these lectures.

We believe that these studies will help to put in a clearer perspective the place of Daniel O'Connell in the shaping of modern Irish nationalism and in the movement for liberal democracy in the nineteenth century world
