This book is intended for those amateurs or professionals who, as actors of producers, are interested in stage movement of every kind, but have neither the time nor inclination for a complete training in the various forms of dance. It must be stressed that it is concerned with the use of movement for actors; it is not intended to train dancers. Movement is here used to mean not only the physical transference of the body from place to place, but gestures, mannerisms, positions and grouping.

This has been approached from two angles. First, the psychological, which will be of use to actors and producers of realistic plays, and second, the external, which is intended for actors and producers of stylised plays, pageants, tableaux and religious plays.

The first approach is necessary as so many actors seem unable to form a clear idea of the picture they are presenting to the audience, because of a lack of understanding of the importance of every curve and angle of the body. There seems no happy medium between the fully trained dancer turned actor, and the deliberately under-playing, natural type of actor who performs with little or no attempt at using the body. Amateurs, almost of necessity, fall into the second category. Many Little Theatres have training schools but here again the young members' classes are usually "Expressionistic Movement" where the students express themselves as abstractions--Blue or Flame Groups, of possibly "Revolt". This is, of course, excellent training for the body and the imagination, but it often does not help an inexperienced actor to move effectively in the type of role he is later asked to take in a realistic play.
