Excerpt

The seven articles which are now being published together under a single cover are the result of field work carried out among the Plateau Tonga under the auspices of the Rhodes- Livingstone Institute. The work was financed by a grant from the Colonial Development and Welfare Fund. The sections on rain-shrines and on modern political organization were written after I had worked among the Plateau Tonga for one year, 1946-7. The other parts were written after the completion of my work and incorporate information obtained also in 1948-50. All appear here as originally published with one exception. When I wrote of the system of clan joking-relationships, I ventured to generalize for the Gwembe Tonga as well as for the Plateau Tonga although at that time I had spent only one month in the Gwembe Valley. Subsequent field work, in 1956-7, led to the discovery that a portion of the Gwembe people do not have clan-joking. I have therefore made a few minor corrections (in square brackets) in the original article.

My thanks are due to the editors of Africa, The Rhodes-Livingstone Journal, the Kroeber Anthropological Society Publications, The International Archives for Ethnography, and African Studies for permission to republish material which originally appeared in these journals. Full details about where the chapters in this book first appeared are given at the end of the bibliography.

I wish to acknowledge also the assistance of my Tonga informants, of Government officials, of my clerk and interpreter, Mr. Benjamin Sipopa, of Mr. Mathias M. Chona, who verified a number of points for me after I had left the field, and of Professor M. Gluckman and Dr. I. G. Cunnison for their help and criticism of the original manuscript. Finally I must thank Professor M. Gluckman for graciously consenting to write a foreword to the collection.
