These lectures were delivered in January, 1954, at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. Appended to them is a Survey regarding homiletics instruction today, by my colleague, Professor Fehl. What, in my opinion, this Survey serves to show is the need for a renewal, rather than merely an improvement, of Christian preaching. There are in it two sentences which I consider to be of the greatest importance:

"Bible and theology must be instructionally related to homiletics."

"There is, at least on the part of the homiletics instructors, an awareness of the failure of our seminaries [in this case, Anglican seminaries] to impress our future clergy with the fact that an essential part of our liturgy is the preaching of the Word."

The George Craig Stewart Memorial Lectures in Preaching were established in this seminary by a gift from Church people of the Diocese of Chicago as a testimony of their esteem for a Bishop who was a distinguished preacher. To be honored . . .
