Delinquent Saints: Disciplinary Action in the Early Congregational Churches of Massachusetts

Excerpt

Five years ago Professor Richard B. Morris, of Columbia University, suggested that a study of the Puritan attitude on marital and domestic life, based on an examination of the old church records, might prove interesting. This book attempts to present the results of the study which has developed from his suggestion. Although the geographical area covered has been narrowed down to Massachusetts, the subject has been expanded to include all aspects of the churches' disciplinary action. My approach and my interest have been historical, although in the last few pages of chapter XV I have taken the liberty of discussing some aspects of the subject from a theological standpoint. Distinctly skeptical of the methods of some theologians who attempt to exploit the name of Clio for the sake of "theologized" history (as distinguished from the history of theology), I have had no desire, however, to emulate their practices.

At the risk of being a bore, I must acknowledge the help of the acquaintances made in the course of my work, including the Reverend Mrs. Hazel Rogers Gredler and the Reverend Messrs. Adrien R. Aeschliman, Robert S. Balfe, John A. Bembow, Arthur W. Bowler, Eugene Bushong, George E. Cary, Raymond Cosseboom, Arthur G. Cummings, Earl C. Davis, George H. Douglas, J. Edward Elliot, Bradford E. Gale, Perley Grant, Clayton Brooks Hale, Herbert R. Houghton, Jr., Thomas Kidd, Ralph Long, Robert H. MacPherson, Howard A. Mc- Donald, Robert D. Ostle, J. Herbert Owen, Ralph Rowse, Francis C. Schlater, Donald J. Selbie, Thomas A. Sinclair, Donald E. Smith, Earle H. Steeves, John A. Stevens, Charles M. Strydon, Lynne P. Townsend, Pierre du Pont Vuilleumier, Wil liam Wakefield . . .
