Aesthetics: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Art

Excerpt

This book is an introduction to aesthetics. Although the second half concentrates on literature I hope that the book will be helpful not only to readers who share my particular interest in aesthetics and literature but to anyone seeking a way into philosophical problems about the arts.

I am grateful to the University of Durham for a sabbatical term in 1981 which helped me to get the book started and for a second sabbatical term in 1985 which put me on the way towards finishing it. I should also like to thank a number of individuals. My husband Anthony, and my parents David and Sylvia Raphael, have all read drafts of chapters and contributed many helpful criticisms and suggestions as well as giving me constant support and encouragement. Bella Wheater read a draft of Chapter 3 and made thought- provoking comments. An earlier version of Chapter 8 was read to the Philosophy Department Staff-Student Seminar at Durham University in 1982; I benefited from the subsequent discussion and particularly from the remarks of Raman Selden. Ainslee Rutledge and Farahnaz Shakoori kindly typed the final draft of the book.
