Huskisson and His Age

Excerpt

Educated at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, I had a natural interest in the growth of Liverpool, and also a family interest in railways. This combination of circumstances first focussed my attention on William Huskisson, and my interest in the statesman grew as I came to the study of Imperial Economy at Toronto and Cambridge.

I have drawn heavily on the Huskisson Papers in the British Museum and the Public Reference Library, Liverpool, as well as on the Board of Trade material in the Public Record Office. And I desire to express my special obligation to Lord Hatherton for permitting me to consult at Teddesley (Staffs.) the valuable records (correspondence, diaries, etc.) inherited by him from his ancestor Edward John Littleton, the first Lord Hatherton.

References in numbered thousands are to the Additional Manuscripts in the British Museum.
