Most of the essays that are included in this book have appeared before--in economic journals, in bank reviews, and so on; those which are simply reprinted, in a substantially unchanged form, are marked in the table of contents with the date of their original publication. Even the two long essays (7) and (8), which are not so marked, are not entirely new, since drafts which belong to them have already appeared; but these have been so much expanded and rewritten that the present versions are almost independent of these former publications. The place of such publication has been noted at the beginning of each separate essay; permissions to reprint, or re-use, which have been granted in each case, are hereby acknowledged.

The general character of the subjects treated will appear from the table of contents, and from the grouping of the papers which is there emphasized. Most of those in the first part are reflections of the ordinary preoccupations of the British economist; they deal, though in a deliberately general way, with topics that have been suggested by British experience during the last twelve years. I have been trying in nearly all cases to see the British problem in its world setting; and I have been helped in this, not only by a personal inclination to generalize, but by the fact that some principal papers, even in this part, were not designed, or not wholly designed, for British audiences. Essay (1), which falls into its place as a suitable introduction to the book, was originally written to be addressed to the Economic Society of Copenhagen; and Essay (7), which has had a long history (since it incorporates a memorandum that was presented to the Cohen Council, and was itself submitted to the Radcliffe Committee on the Monetary System when in its final form), has benefited by intermediate stages when it was used as material for lectures at Harvard . . .
