Excerpt

THE LONGER OF THESE TWO ESSAYS GREW OUT OF AN attempt to write a paper for a group of theologians which met in 1947 at St Deiniol's Library, Hawarden, under the chairmanship of Dr A. R. Vidler. On that occasion some extracts were read with connecting remarks, and the full text is presented here for the first time. The essay on Henry Vaughan has appeared previously in the first volume of the Journal of the Historical Society of the Church in Wales. My thanks are due to the authors and publishers who have allowed me to quote copyright material. Full references are given in the notes. Of earlier works I have used such editions as lay to hand. I had no opportunity of access to the great libraries while writing, but I believe that the texts employed are sufficiently authoritative. Detailed references are supplied to satisfy scholarly curiosity rather than to commend the particular editions cited.
