The purpose of this study is to assay in brief form a few recent tendencies in our religious life. In the course of the past decade and more, visible, substantial, and fairly rapid change has taken place in the American religious scene. The possible significance of this observation is tempered somewhat by the fact that American life as a whole has always been a highly dynamic affair. Nevertheless, if overt evidence is any guide, our nation has been experiencing of late a considerable intensification of religiousness or at least of religiosity.

We should hardly say that a great "religious revival" has been under way in the United States. The most that can be asserted, with the support of many competent observers, is that we have witnessed a manifest upsurge of interest in religion.

No pretense is made here of dealing with any "main direction" of contemporary American religion as a whole. To insist that there is just a single direction would be a highly risky exercise--until, perhaps, future historians may . . .
