Excerpt

The eighteen essays which make up this volume share a common concern with the thought of Alfred North Whitehead; they differ with respect to the date and circumstances of their composition.

The first and largest group (eight papers) consists of articles written for a special Whitehead Centennial Issue of the Journal of Philosophy (Vol. 58, No. 19: September 14, 1961). This group includes the papers by V. C. Chappell, Lucio Chiaraviglio, William A. Christian, William Ernest Hocking, Nathaniel Lawrence, Hugues Leblanc, Ivor Leclerc, and Robert M. Palter. Chiaraviglio's paper has been retitled and substantially enlarged. The papers by Lawrence, Leblanc, and Palter have been slightly revised. The remaining papers of this group are reprinted without change.

The second group (five papers) represents a selection from among the many articles on Whitehead published by the Journal of Philosophy over the past thirty-odd years. This group, ranging in date of original publication from 1930 to 1959, includes the papers by Mason W. Gross, Everett W. Hall, J. W. Robson, Gregory Vlastos, and Daniel D. Williams. Robson's paper has been slightly abridged; the other papers are reprinted in full. In all cases references to Whitehead's works have been simplified and standardized, using the abbreviations now generally accepted by Whitehead scholars (e.g., SMW for Science and the Modern World--see complete listing in "Sources").

The last group (five papers) is made up of articles written for this volume and not previously published. This group includes the papers by Charles Hartshorne, Victor Lowe, Ralph V. Norman, Jr., Richard M. Rorty, and Donald W. Sherburne.

In this volume the papers are arranged not by date of composition or publication, but systematically by topic. They fall into four broad groupings: Part I, Whitehead as Man and Thinker; Part II, Logic, Mathematics, and Methodology; Part III, Metaphysics and Cosmology; and Part IV, Ethics, Aesthetics, and Philosophical Theology. Within each of these parts, individual papers are arranged alphabetically by author. The place and date of original publication of the reprinted papers, and the extent of revisions (if any), are indicated in footnotes on their respective title pages. The concluding section of the volume (Part V, Documents and Materials) contains a hitherto unpublished . . .
