As every clergyman soon finds out, there are many facets to his ministry. There is a pastoral ministry, a preaching ministry, and a sacramental ministry, as well as several other kinds. This book attempts to deal with some small segment of the teaching ministry. It cannot be claimed that this is the most important aspect of the clergyman's various functions. No one is ever brought to the depths of any faith by information or history or explanations. But it is nevertheless true that people like to "get things straightened out" in their minds with regard to their own religion and the religion of others. And it is also true that by doing so they benefit considerably.

The value of what might be called "sidelights" on religion first began to engage my active interest one day some years ago when I was having lunch at one of those clubs where everyone sits at a big round table. A man a few seats away from me asked me the meaning of "Maundy . . .
