This small monograph, the outcome of intermittent activity in two continents and three countries over the space of six years, would not have been completed without a great deal of help which it is a pleasure rather than a duty to acknowledge here.

My thanks are due to the following: His Excellency the Netherlands Minister for Foreign Affairs, for permission to consult documents not at that time open to public inspection; the present Earls of Clarendon and Kimberley, for permission to make use of their family papers; Dr. A. J. Veenendaal, for allowing me to see and make use of the proofs of Dr. Wolteringen's forthcoming volume in the Rijks Geschiedkundige Publicatien; Dr. J. D. Fage, for his encouragement and advice; Dr. W. D. McIntyre, for guidance to British archive materials; and Mr. G. E. Metcalfe, for generously giving me the benefit of his unrivalled knowledge of the British connexion with the Gold Coast in the nineteenth century.

I owe a very special debt of gratitude to Miss A. M. P. Mollema, for her expert advice on the Dutch part in the negotiations of the treaty of cession and for allowing me free use of her collection of transcripts; and to Miss J. W. Jurriaanse, Archivist of the Dutch Ministry for Foreign Affairs, whose unfailing kindness I shall always remember.

In thanking the staffs of all the libraries and archives in which I have worked I think particularly of Mr. Richard Burkett of the library of the University College of Ghana, and of those archivists and members of the reading-room staff, too numerous to mention by name, who make the Algemeen Rijksarchief the most pleasant of all state archives. I must add also my thanks to the staff of the National Register of Archives, for both information and assistance.

I am grateful to the Historical Society of Ghana for permission to print here material already used in a paper read to a conference of . . .
