The Problem of Evil: Christian Concepts and the Book of Job

Excerpt

The problem of evil is the source of much that is truly great in religious thought and literature, perhaps because it is a problem with which every generation and every individual must struggle. It is a struggle that I began when, as a boy, I first encountered Bunyan Pilgrim's Progress. From then until now the problem has been the central core of my studies. As a consequence, this is a book that had to be written, or at least a study that had to be completed as part of my own pilgrimage.

In the summer of 1932, after completing a doctoral dissertation at the University of Southern California on a pragmatic interpretation of the Book of Job, I was invited to lecture on that subject at the Pacific Palisades Summer Institute not far away. Each day the lecture was followed by a discussion period. An attentive but remarkably quiet listener was Dr. Alexander Hardie, a venerable and learned minister who kept close watch on the opinions of his younger brethren. At the end of the seminar he asked for the floor and addressed a few simple words of advice directly to me: "My dear scholarly young brother, if you will put those lectures away for fifteen years and then take them out you may know enough to talk about the Book of Job." Dr. Hardie belonged to a blunt- spoken generation; his dry remark was something of a shock, and a matter of some amusement to my contemporaries. But he was right and I know it even better after twenty years. I still know too little to interpret this document adequately. The Book of Job ought to be studied by every youth. Then it should be brought out for every succeeding crisis of life.
