Absent and Present

Excerpt

The Child is father of the Man . . .
No one was there. The curtains were drawn,
My stomach grown
Heavier bare,
Tobacco flecks lay through
The pubic hair.
Natural man,
Where are you?

Behind a fence
Two nine-year-old
Physicians played
With touching innocence;
The probes we made
Were quickly healed
For probing held
A sovereign aid.

So close to the bone
And yet no dangerous game
For nobody came
To take it to heart:
It lies beyond art
How kids can take on
And take off the part
Of woman or man.
