Elementary School Student Teaching was originally published in 1950 as a companion volume to the second edition of Raleigh Schorling pioneering work, Student Teaching. The second edition, which was published in 1955, was an extensive and thoroughgoing revision. The fundamental structure and plan of the original volume were retained, but much new material was introduced.

Advice from many users of the second edition indicated that some major changes should be introduced in a third edition but that the greatest need was in connection with various detailed points in which useful alterations should be made. This third edition continues to be a comprehensive, yet compact, body of materials which speaks directly to the student teacher, presents important pedagogical concepts within the context of the classroom situation, and helps bridge the gap between the educational theory discussed in college classrooms and teaching children in elementary schools.

The purpose of this book is to serve as a basic professional guide to student teaching. The text has been written to develop a unified learning experience for prospective teachers. It is not meant to take the place of manuals developed locally to guide students with respect to the customs and regulations of specific situations. As in previous editions, the authors have not hesitated to present their own points of view on certain controversial aspects of educational theory. However, students who use the book are encouraged to think out important issues for themselves and to arrive at their own conclusions.
