45 Contemporary Mexican Artists: A Twentieth-Century Renaissance

Excerpt

Here are gathered together forty-five of the leading artists of contemporary Mexico. They are presented as they might appear at a national exhibition--with photographs and biographical sketches serving for the artists themselves, and reproductions giving semblance of their paintings, drawings, and sculptures as we would see them in the corridors of museum or pavilion. Words and photographs and plates cannot, of course, do more than suggest reality with varying intensity. But the opulence, impact, and genius of Mexican art are such as to give me confidence that these pages will convey strong impressions of its character.

Here are artists of international fame, others important in Mexico but little known outside their country, still others significant in Mexican art but by no means famous, and, last, several young men and women whose reputations are only begun. These latter personalities, the "unknowns" (whether from youth or because of some seclusiveness self- chosen or imposed), remind us that the renaissance of Mexican art in our time stems from a widespread quickening of the creative genius of the country. It is remarkable that so many as forty-five artists were found appropriate for this book, but more so is the fact that a fairer presentation would include more.

This renaissance became apparent thirty years ago, when the striking, often beautiful, and sometimes formidable murals of the early 1920's were being painted on Mexican walls. Those great days are now over. Their going reveals that there has been no ebb in creativeness but, rather, diversification of interest that was pervasive earlier but generally was overlooked while deserved acclaim was being accorded the muralists. How much the present vigor of Mexican art owes to international appreciation of the murals, how much to the educational encouragement . . .
