This number contains the papers read at a Symposium of the Society for Experimental Biology, which was held at Bristol in July 1951. It is the sixth of an annual series of Symposium Reports. The Symposium for 1952 will be on 'Mechanisms of Evolution'.

The Society is deeply indebted to the Rockefeller Foundation, to Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., and to the British Council for financial aid.

The editors wish to thank the members of the Advisory Committee who assisted us in preparing the Symposium programme; in particular, our thanks are due to Dr J. A. Kitching and Dr M. M. Swann. We also wish to thank the Cambridge University Press for the kindness with which we were assisted in producing this report.
