Synopsis

The first edition of this book was published in 1966. It became a standard work as a survey of economic, social, and political origins of modern Spain leading up to the apparent defeat of the liberal tradition with General Franco's victory in the Civil War. Since 1966 there has been a revolution in Spanish historiography. The more modern history of Spain, a neglected, even dangerous field, virtually unexplored, has since come into its own. In this edition, Raymond Carr has added new chapters that examine Francoism, its political system, and the society it sustained. He brings the story up to the death of General Franco in 1975, and in an extensive bibliographical essay considers the recent contribution of Spanish scholars to the period 1808-1939.

Excerpt

Since this book was written in 1966 there has been a revolution in Spanish historiography. Once regarded as an ill-conceived essay in liberalism the more modern history of Spain was a neglected, even dangerous field, un- explored except by a handful of brave men of whom my lamented friend Jaime Vicens Vives was one. It has now come into its own. The title of ProfessorArtola book Orígenes de la España contemporánea, published in 1959, now reflects a central concern that has sustained a growth industry.

The contributions of Spanish scholars to the history of modern Spain has been outstanding and has enriched my own understanding of Spanish history. I would like to acknowledge my own debt to their achievements. Since I have not altered the main text, this acknowledgement can only take the form of an expanded bibliography. A comparison with the original bibliography highlights the progress that has been made, particularly in the field of economic history.

In this edition I have added chapters that bring the story up to the death of General Franco. They owe much to the collaboration of Professor J.P. Fusi contained in our España: De la dictadura a la democrácia (Editorial Planeta, Barcelona, 1979).

The bibliographical references in these new chapters are not incorporated in the bibliographical index, but full details are contained in the footnotes.
