Excerpt

Sponsored jointly by the Library and the Department of English, University of California, Los Angeles, the third invitational seminar at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library was held on 14 July 1956. Forty-three persons represtting twenty-two institutions were in attendance.

The seminar, which met in two sessions, was on problems in English prose of the Restoration and Eighteenth Century. Professors James R. Sutherland and Ian Watt, acting as leaders, delivered the papers printed here. We believe their remarks will interest all students of English literature of the Classical period, and consequently we are pleased to make them available in this pamphlet.
