Excerpt

Simple functional objects reflect the characteristics of their time in an uncomplicated way. The 6th century lamp comes from an era of invention and experiment. The 5th century lamp is classical, providing a standard of lampmaking excellence with an outline defined by a single, wholly pleasing curve. The Hellenistic lamp, functionally more practical with its smaller opening and its hole on the side for the wick poker or for hanging, and artistically more elaborate, belongs to still another world.
