Excerpt

TATIANA SUKHOTIN-TOLSTOY, the author of this book, was the second child and eldest daughter of Leo Tolstoy.

Until her marriage in 1899, she was her father's constant companion. Her diaries, begun when she was only thirteen years old and written with complete candour, give a day- to-day picture of family life at Yasnaia Poliana and describe events, discussions and emotional reactions with scrupulous veracity.

They are therefore a primary source for all students of Tolstoy. The original Russian text has never previously been published or translated.

It will be noted that some of the Russian proper names in the text have been anglicised. This has been done for the convenience of the reader and to prevent confusion where several persons were known to the Tolstoy family by the same name or diminutive. In certain cases German and French forms have been retained where these were used by the Tolstoy family. The General Editor of the series, Professor Konovalov, is not responsible for this choice or for the trans-literation.
