What this book is for

One evening last winter, my wife, Christine, who had just taken over the temporary management of a small social agency, looked across the room and asked me to give her the titles of two or three manuals of management from which she could find out how to go about her assignment in a scientific way. I said that I didn't have the titles at the tip of my tongue but would look them up the next day. In the decade since my Principles of Organization was published, I had gotten a little out of touch with the hortatory literature of management and welcomed the opportunity to find out what was now available.

The search for those titles took much longer than expected and led directly to the present book. I was able to put together a list of excellent books, ranging from old standbys to recent best sellers (the list is given at the end of this book), but none of them . . .
