Excerpt

. . . an assemblage of 105 of the most distinguished living authors in the world, selected, in the main, through balloting in many countries among reading individuals, 643 of whom signed and returned their ballots nominating the authors now brought together, for the first time in any language, in this book.

In the following pages I respectfully submit some details of what kind of a book this is; who is in it, where the authors come from and how the book was assembled. I would like also to compare briefly the balloting from different groups; and to say why such a book in the world today, in English, has its value; and what are some of the overtones and meanings in the book.

It is, of course, a book of a period, as there have been other books, like Don Quixote, or Gargantua and Pantagruel, or further back, the Decameron, which were period books. And the greatest writers of a period take on the lights and shadows of their time. But this is not a one-man book -- in editing or in writing. It contains 105 of the most representative writers of today. There is no Shakespeare in it, no Keats nor Milton. It does not go back to the Elizabethans, nor does it include the writers who have functioned in our time but now are dead. It is a book of writers now living, men and women who, in their individual and creative ways, have had an influence of greatness on their day.
