The William Collins autographs which are here printed have been preserved among the Warton papers in the library of Trinity College, Oxford. When Thomas Warton died in the College in 1790, most of his papers were removed by his brother to Winchester. Some years later, the College acquired many of the family papers from various sources. They were put into rough order in 1825, but no detailed examination was undertaken, and the William Collins autographs were not identified.

The President and Fellows of Trinity have generously allowed me to work on the collection, and it is with their kind permission that the Collins manuscripts, and notes by the Wartons bearing on Collins, are now published. At every stage of my work Professor D. Nichol Smith and Mr. Herbert Davis have given me invaluable information and advice, sparing themselves no trouble. Mr. J. M. G. Blakiston has kindly supplied information about Winchester. Mr. D. M. Leahy, of Manchester University, has helped me with the proofs. I am indebted to Mr. John Woodward, Assistant Keeper in the Ashmolean Museum, for help in elucidating the elegy on a young painter. I owe much to my wife's encouragement and help.
