At the outset the reader should know what a perusal of this work will evidence; that is, that this is a history of Alaska and not an attempt at the history. The book is neither as interpretive nor as exhaustive as I would have liked to have made it. Alaska is still in the infancy of its development and historical research on the subject is just as elementary. This condition is liable to maintain longer than in the instance of most regions because of certain peculiar circumstances.

Russian archives which bulk large in any study of Alaska are a terrific obstacle to surmount, both because of the inaptitude for Americans to acquire facile use of that language, and the disturbed political conditions in that country. Dr. Golder made a vast store of material available during his comparatively short but brilliant period of historical labor, but his unfortunate loss leaves the field again almost a dark continent.

Meanwhile, the need of bringing together and summarizing some of the researches of recent years was felt by many. At the suggestion of Professor Channing and because of his kindly encouragement this task was attempted together with some effort, however slight, toward picturing the people and true perspective of Alaska's place in the world of to-day.
