Television and the Teaching of English

Excerpt

By giving it an unprecedented opportunity to function in new contexts and to appear in new forms, television has extended the force and influence of the English language. What becomes of this opportunity will depend in large measure on the millions of youngsters for whom television is the most persistent and magnetic source of information and a primary source of literary experience. To the extent that their responses to television are informed, discriminating, and creative, we may be assured that our language and literature, as well as the lives of our students, will be enriched by contact with television. But taste and critical judgment are learned habits of mind. As a consequence, education, as in most things, is the decisive factor.

The ultimate purpose of this book is to contribute toward the "television education" of our students. The immediate goal of the book is to offer motivation, aid, and confidence to teachers of English who wish to help their students obtain that education.

Teachers of English are singled out because it is they who have the major responsibility for teaching students how to develop those skills that will enable them to respond with satisfaction and intelligence to diverse communication forms. The English teacher, more than any other, is concerned with those media through which our language and literature are given form. The newspaper, the magazine, the film, the radio --each of these media has challenged the resourcefulness and virtuosity of the English teacher. Television presents still anU+00D other challenge.

This book is divided into two parts. Part One provides teachers with a perspective, and some of the information and vocabulary they will need in order to think and teach about television as an educational and cultural medium. No attempt . . .
