It is inconceivable that any sensitive and sympathetic person delving into the long history of what is today called the Dominican Republic should fail to be touched by the story of the Dominican people. It is a story of pathos and bravery; of tragedy and noble aspirations; of betrayal and redemption. They have always been, and are today, kindly but proud; gentle but surpassingly courageous. Their core of character remains sound after centuries of the most soul-searing experiences.

What follows is by no means a definitive study or history of the Republic. It is in the nature of a summary, a report on what has gone before, what is in progress now and an indication of some of the almost incalculable possibilities that lie ahead. In particular, what is said here arises from the conviction that the people of the United States will have done themselves a disservice as well as a disservice to a good Caribbean neighbor if they fail to appreciate the needs, feelings, ambitions and problems of the Dominican people.
