Excerpt

My initial obligation is to the late Warden Sumner, of All Souls College, without whose interest and encouragement (which I valued very greatly) this book might not have been begun; and to the College itself, for accepting the book as a research project in 1948. I should also like to thank Mr. Rohan Butler and Mr. F. W. Bateson for reading and commenting upon parts of the manuscript, and Mr. A. L. Rowse and Mr. J. B. Bamborough for other help. I am indebted also to the Bodleian Library, the Cambridge University Library, the Aberdeen University Library, and particularly, for their special help to a new-comer, the National Library of Scotland. My chief debt in both the planning and preparation of the book is to my wife.
