The pages of this book are facsimiles of the sheets prepared for the Human Relations Area Files. The page headings carry the following information, in sequence from left to right: (1) the number assigned to this work in the Human Relations Area Files on the Twi peoples; (2) the author's name; (3) the page number; (4) the HRAF analyst's evaluation of the character of the work, in this case, E signifying that the author is an ethnologist, and 5 indicating that the work is excellent, and is based on original field work; (5) the date, of the field work, in parenthesis;(6) the date of publication; (7) the ethnic group.

In the left-hand margins of the pages are found the category numbers referring to the classification in the Outline of Cultural Materials; (Third Revised Edition, New Haven, 1950). These numbers serve primarily for the classification of the file sheets, but they also serve in this volume as a serviceable and complete index. If reader is particularly concerned with specific subjects he can find the corresponding numbers and look for these in the margins of the publication pages. When he has read all of the portions thus numbered he can be sure that the content of the book has been exhausted on the subject in question.

The categories are described and cross-referenced in great detail in the Outline of Cultural Materials, and some readers may find it desirable, to have the Outline at hand. However, the abbreviated list, reproduced in the present volume following this preface, gives the most general term for the subject of each category number.

Category numbers appear as nearly as possible beside the line where the subject logically begins. They appear singly or in groups, and the number or numbers refer to the text which ensues, down to the point where a different number is added. If the original subject continues with the new subject, the original number is repeated.
