Of the six essays which go to make up this volume, the first four were originally prepared for translation into Italian and given as lectures at several universities in Italy during the academic year 1952-53, when the writer had the good fortune to spend the most unforgettable year of his life serving as Visiting Professor of Philosophy at the University of Turin under a Fulbright grant from the State Department. The same four lectures were subsequently prepared in Spanish and delivered at the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana in the Andean capital of Quito during the last half of the academic year 1955-56, at which time the author served as Visiting Professor of Philosophy at the Central University of Ecuador under a Smith-Mundt grant, also awarded by our State Department.

Both the Italian and the Spanish versions of the lectures have appeared in book form under the following titles, respectively, Verso un naturalismo critico (1953) and El neo-naturalismo norteamericano (1956). The Preface to the Italian edition was contributed by Nicola Abbagnano of Turin; that to the Spanish edition, by José Vasconcelos of Mexico City. This explains the dedication of the present edition to both distinguished men.
