The genesis of this book is my Ph.D. dissertation Location Factors in the Synthetic-Fiber Industry, accepted at Harvard University in 1957. My indebtedness to Dr. Walter Isard for supervising its preparation as a doctoral thesis and for editing the manuscript in its transition to this study is simply beyond measure. In a unique way he has fathered the development of modern regional science through his own theoretical and empirical contributions and the stimulation he has provided his students and colleagues.

In addition, I must mention the invaluable assistance of Dr. Eugene V. Schooler of the University of Pennsylvania in preparing the manuscript and molding the content of the book. I have also benefited from the critical comments of Dr. Arthur Smithies and Dr. Leon Moses of Harvard University, who were devil's advocates in the thesis stage.

That this study exists at all was made possible by a grant from the Social Science Research Center of the University of Puerto Rico, which sponsored the project on Economic Relations of Puerto Rico with the Mainland. In this connection I deeply appreciate the far-sighted and constant stimulation provided by Dr. Millard Hansen, Director of the Social Science Research Center. The research was performed at the Section of Urban and Regional Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where Dr. John F. O'Donnell and Dr. Thomas Vietorisz aided me immeasurably in making chemical engineering estimates.

A host of people in the chemical industry and in engineering firms have helped me by providing information. I am also grateful for permission to reproduce charts, tables, and text passages from . . .
