Excerpt

About ten years ago the writer became interested in the question how much real profit Labor might expect from violent revolution. The scene for such a study was obviously Soviet Russia. The present volume is the first systematic attempt to compare very nearly a quarter of a century of Communist achievement since 1917 with Russian progress in the preceding twenty-five years, giving particular attention to the working class. Facts rather than opinions are stressed. Time and effort have gone into gathering the material, much of which could find no room in this volume. But it is a beginning--the first step toward a concrete presentation of general progress in Russia, and especially the betterment of Labor, before and after 1917.

The material on the Soviet régime has been derived from official Communist sources, and even about conditions in Czarist Russia preference has been given to Soviet sources of information. Such a summary of fifty years of Russian history should contribute to a sounder understanding of the actual accomplishments of the Soviet régime, and so liberate the Communist experiment from the conflicting interpretations in which it has been submerged.

Lenin's avowed purpose before the Bolshevik revolution and in the months immediately after was the political and economic emancipation of the Russian proletariat. Any appraisal of the Soviet record must begin with this cardinal point. Bolshevik achievements in industrialization and in mechanized agriculture are significant, but nevertheless of secondary importance. No national organism can remain economically dormant for twenty-three years, and least of all a vast country like Russia; the Slav people worked and produced under Ivan the Terrible.
