Excerpt

People beginning research in the behavioral sciences frequently find themselves faced with an unexpected and distressing problem. They need apparatus. Many institutions are fortunate enough to have a machine shop, complete with machinist to design and build mechanical equipment, and some schools have facilities for the design and construction of electric apparatus as well. Even when a department has mechanics and technicians, there is frequently someone among the faculty or graduate student body who is in great demand because he can design electric circuits. This harried expert is asked two questions over and over again: "How did you ever learn all this?" and "Is there any place where I can learn it?"

The answer to the first question is usually that the expert has learned from experience. The answer to the second is much more difficult. Courses given in electrical engineering schools are almost always too theoretical and complex to be of direct value to experimenters who have not had the necessary background. Courses offered by technical schools, such as television repair training schools, are just the opposite. They are oriented so specifically toward radio and television that they are of little help in general circuit design. Textbooks for engineering and technical courses have the same shortcomings.

This book has been written specifically for researchers in the behavioral sciences, and particularly for those who have little or no knowledge of electricity. It is my hope that it will provide them with a clearer understanding of the basic principles of electricity and will enable them to apply these principles directly to their experimental work.
