The materials presented in this volume are published for the purpose of helping the peoples of the free world to understand the Soviet Union. They tell the story in authentic detail of the operation of the Soviet system of mind control. No one who is unfamiliar with the reach and power of this system can pretend to an understanding of that strange land whose spokesmen are fond of calling "the first workers' republic in history."

The book could have many titles. At any rate, to the authors any one of several seemed at one time or another to be entirely fitting. As we read the charges of heresy and the endless recantations and confessions of error or guilt by leading writers, artists, and scientists, The Return of the Inquisition appeared to be a "natural" title. Then the substance of the resolutions of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party suggested The Assault Upon the West, after Aurel Kolnai's volume on German Naziism which was published in 1938 under the title of The War Against the West. Also, because of their glorification of everything Soviet and even Russian, these resolutions and the responses which they evoked might well have been called The Soviet Union Over All. Even in his maddest moments Hitler rarely put on an exhibition of megalomania more impressive than the calculated policy of the Kremlin. Indeed Da Zdravstvuet Stalin or Heil Stalin would not have been inappropriate. The Confident Men of the Kremlin would have been wholly suitable and would have served to correct the widespread notion that these men are "scared."
