More than a quarter of a century ago, a life of Sarah Orne Jewett by F. O. Matthiessen appeared. The volume, long out of print, was written while Miss Mary Rice Jewett, the subject's sister, was still living. For it Mary Jewett supplied information; to the completed work she extended her approval. The biography is accurate but thin in factual detail because Mr. Matthiessen in a brief time was supplying a biography where none existed and because large collections of Miss Jewett's papers had not been assembled and documented. There are few writers whose papers and correspondence have been so carefully preserved as have Miss Jewett's, and the collections in the Houghton Library of Harvard University and the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities were made possible by the natural "saving habits" of a New England family, reluctant to destroy anything which might be of interest.
